Volunteering in an Oasis Down the Hall

Volunteering in an Oasis Down the Hall

Ghada’s Volunteer Experience

After attending an information session to learn more about volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, Ghada couldn’t wait to get started and is happy today that she did! Stepping in where help was needed, Ghada became a regular volunteer at the RM Family Room London.

Located in the Children’s Hospital, the Family Room is a special space similar to the Ronald McDonald House which strives to keep families close. The space provides any families staying in hospital with a sick child with a place to grab a cup of coffee, do laundry, have a snack or just sit and relax for a little while. Ghada explains how volunteering at the Family Room has been an extremely positive experience. She has had the opportunity to not only interact with families in the hospital but also has met other volunteers, who share similar interests. When asked about her experience volunteering at the Family Room she explained one standout moment that still sticks with her today.

One Christmas Eve, a grandmother who had been using the Family Room quite frequently came in with her daughter and her grandchild to say thank you before leaving the hospital. Ghada had often chatted with the grandmother during her journey, laughing and even crying together. She built a connection with this family that she still holds close today. As a volunteer at the Family Room it’s the little things that count.

Why do you choose RMHC-SWO to volunteer your time?

I went to an information session that RMHC-SWO offers for people who want to get involved with the Ronald McDonald House, and after that, I was all about it! I enjoy being there because you’re very hands-on with the families- it’s a bittersweet experience.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

DO IT! I can’t picture myself being anywhere else. I remember during the information session, volunteers mentioned how long they had been here and it seems like volunteering has become a generational thing. Granddaughters of past volunteers are now volunteering. It is great!
