RMH Windsor Celebrates 5 Years

WINDSOR, May 6th, 2021 – Today marks a very special moment in Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Southwestern Ontario history – the 5-year anniversary of the first Canadian House-within-a-Hospital, right here in Windsor, ON. Since opening its doors in May of 2016, Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Windsor has provided support to more than 3,700 families through its various programs, keeping them close to their seriously ill or injured children at a crucial time when family can feel like the best medicine.

A virtual celebration today will bring key speakers and Windsor advocates together to reflect on the incredible progress RMH Windsor has seen, which has resulted in providing 7,130 nights of comfort to families with some of Ontario’s most critically ill children. Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) has acknowledged the impact having RMH has had on both patients and overall service, “It has allowed families who are struggling with the health of their child, financial issues to be able to be within steps of their loved one during the most critical of times.” David Musyj, CEO and President of WRH assures, “As we move forward with our planning of a new acute care hospital for our region, we are going to have RMH right beside us to ensure they form an integral part of that facility and learn from the great things that have happened here at Windsor Regional Hospital.”

The McDonnell Family from Essex called RMH Windsor “home” for 87 nights close to their
premature daughter. 55% of caregivers are staying close to a premature child at RMH Windsor.

It has been with the support of local community groups, businesses, and individuals that RMH Windsor has continued to advance its reach within the local community, implementing the Day Pass Program and the Cart with Heart to serve thousands of additional caregivers in-hospital each year. Christine Richer, Senior Manager of RMH Windsor, notes the importance of collaboration and community support, “We could not have asked for a better hospital partner than WRH, and are thankful for our Founding and Forever partner, McDonald’s, who embrace our mission every day. The volunteers, whether assisting around the House or picking up groceries, bring the community into the House and make it feel like a home.”

As we look toward the years ahead with confidence, knowing RMH Windsor has a community of advocates raising awareness and bringing in support that keeps families close.
