London, Ontario - Ronald McDonald House Charites Southwestern Ontario (RMHC-SWO) works hand in hand with the RMHC Global team, based in Chicago. Although the London House is a local, independent organization, RMHC Global provides guidance and perspective for all chapters world-wide, especially during this critical time. On March 23, RMHC Global, after careful consultation with health experts, asked all chapters to suspend accepting new families into our facilities so we could help prevent spread of the COVID-19 and keep our families, who are already in the House, safe.
Working closely with RMHC Global, Children’s Hospital and the London Middlesex Health Unit we have developed a safe and sequential process for reinstating RMHC-SWO Program Operations. Mike Malleck, RMHC-SWO Board of Directors President, commends the development of a 4-phased re-introduction plan,
“Unusual times call for unusual solutions. I commend the RMHC-SWO team for developing this unique strategy of staging families into the London House. Over the past couple of months there have been many unknowns, but one thing is for certain, our families need us now more than ever. We look forward to welcoming new families who have been displaced while our services have been limited and to have them call us their home away from home.”
Gradually returning to full program operations at RMHC London, RMHC Windsor and the RMH Family Room, is the safest way to ensuring the highest protection for families, staff and volunteers given all mitigating factors and the strength and unpredictability of COIVD-19.
In phase 1 we will begin introducing new families to RMHC London through the use of 5 Jayco trailers on loan from Hiemstra Trailer Sales Ltd. which are currently located in our secure parking lot. These units will act as a transition space to ensure that existing families are protected from additional risk, and new families are properly screened and slowly transitioned into our larger House. Each trailer has a Family Sponsor, helping to provide “home” to new families: Cargill Value Added Protein, Genorgijev Financial Group, HIRA, Tricar, and Trucking for Kids. We anticipate that over the course of 8-10 weeks we will be able to expand to full operational capacity and pre-COIVD eligibility.
