Volunteers are the heart of RMH London (RMHL), especially when it comes to our Dinner Program. Our meals are prepared and served by hundreds of compassionate and mission driven community volunteers each day.
RMH London & RMH Windsor dinners provide families with a healthy homecooked meal each night, and an opportunity to connect with other families and volunteers. The dinners are not only nourishing for the body but good for the soul, as families sharing dinner at RMHL have become lifelong friends outside the House.
On one memorable occasion, a Mom staying in the House followed the smell of freshly baked brownies to the kitchen, where Karen was baking. After a few minutes of getting to know the Mom, Karen prepared a delicious plain brownie bowl with ice cream and personally delivered it to her. Once received, the Mom started tearing up, letting Karen know how much this made her day. It is the small acts of kindness from our volunteers that end up having the biggest impact on the families calling us “home-away-from-home”!
When our volunteer program was suspended in March 2020, we knew we needed to honor the volunteer team and find a way to keep feeding our families. This is where our small but mighty ‘mission critical’ volunteers came into play. Karen, Wendi, Pat, and Bill accepted this large responsibility and stepped in to fill the void, left by the volunteers while our program was suspended for months, and then again in the Fall. This team prepared, cooked, and packaged meals for hours on end, all while keeping spirits high. Although our dinner service as we know it has changed, this team always goes above and beyond to make sure families leave the kitchen with full bellies and warm hearts.
