The comfort of a chair

Inspiring a family to help

The Cleft Strong Golf Tournament will be teeing off for its third year this September 18, 2021! Inspired by 4-year-old Helaina who was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, her parents Jerard and Terrilynn have been organizing this golf tournament each September at Bluewater Golf Course so they can continue to ensure other families receive the support that they did.

The memory that stayed with us most is allowing Helaina to feel at home.  After Helaina had a cardiac arrest, it took her a long time to trust again. We were able to take her over to the house where there were no doctors, no medical equipment, and no stress. All she had to do while at the house was play and interact with people who were not medical professionals. These visits to the house helped Helaina recover faster and allowed her to play and be a kid.

Having stayed a total of 80 nights over 8 different stays, Helaina knows the House well, and for Terrilynn and Jerard, knowing they have a place to stay whenever they unexpectedly must return to London for medical treatment continues to bring comfort. They fondly remember the chairs at the front door, and they know those chairs will be there for them if they ever need them again.

Many times after being airlifted with nothing but the clothes we had on, sitting in those inviting chairs at the front door when we walked in the House brought instant relief. We were supported, respected, and loved throughout our troubled times. It’s been one of our best experiences despite the situation. There is no way to ever give back, but we will try to always return that feeling of comfort.

The Cleft Strong Golf Tournament will be teeing off for its third year, inspired by 4-year-old Helaina who was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. Having stayed a total of 80 nights over 8 different stays, Helaina and her parents can share the true impact RMHC-SWO makes...

Today, Helaina has a g-tube which she feeds through to make sure her lungs stay clear and healthy. She is a very happy girl with not many worries to be had! Her loves to cuddle with her dog Huey Lewis who can also be found dropping off proceeds from the Cleft Strong Golf Tournament! We are wishing the Hutchinson family and all the golfers participating a great day teeing off in support of #KeepingFamiliesClose.
